My favorite hobby is crocheting doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.

After Barbie Basic Overalls was published, I got a request to make the pattern fit Pullip or Blythe. Unfortunately, since the base for the overalls is Barbie Short Shorts, a pair of shorts that requires no snaps, I couldn't make the overalls until I figured out a way to make bottoms that require no snaps for Pullip dolls.

First, I decided to find a way to make Pullip pants without using any snaps. However, since I have lately been working exclusively with my Makies doll, I thought it would be prudent to fulfill the request in a more general format. This article is a free pattern to make doll shorts or pants.

If you want to make one for Makies dolls, I've included my notes for Makies shorts at the end of the article.

Materials

  • Size No. 10 Crochet Cotton Thread (or whatever size you want to use)
  • Size No. 5 Crochet Steel Hook (or whatever size is appropriate for your yarn or thread)
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Doll

Abbreviations Used in American Terms

  • Ch - chain
  • St(s) - stitch(es)
  • RS - right side
  • WS - wrong side
  • Sl st - slip stitch
  • Sc - single crochet
  • Dec - work 1 sc in the 2 indicated sts

Pattern

Round 1 (RS): Ch an odd number, N, that will fit your doll at the widest part (usually the hips), join with a sl st in the first ch to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st in the ch 1, turn. (N sc's)

Round 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with sl st in the ch 1, turn. (N sc's)

At this point, try it on the doll to check the fit. Adjust N if you find the fit too loose, making sure that the Rounds will be just enough to pull over your doll's legs and still be able to stay on the waist. You do not want the project to be too loose since it will just fall off the doll. Remember that N should be an odd number.

Here is a photo of what it should look like so far:

The Rounds are just enough to fit through the widest part of the doll and still stay on the waist.

Repeat Round 2 until you reach the point where you want the division for the legs to start. End with a WS Round. Keep placing your work on the doll to check your progress. You want to have some space from the crotch to the division, so make sure you have worked enough Rounds to provide this allowance. Having this extra space will allow your dolls to stretch their legs once the shorts or pants are done.

Here is a photo of what it should look like:

I added a few Rounds once I reached the crotch part to provide some space before going into the leg division.

For the leg division:

Chain a length that will just connect the front and back without stretching the shorts or pants. Join the chain to the opposite side by skipping (N-1)/2 sts and then sl st on the next st. So, for example, your N was 41. (41-1)/2 = 20. Sk 20 sts, and then sl st in the next st to form the division. Here is a photo of what it should look like:

This part will require some trial and error to get the right length for the chain. You want it to just hold the front and back together without any twisting, since any bumps will be visible as you make the leg parts of the shorts.

First leg:

Round 1: Turn, ch 1, sc in each ch and in each sc around, join with sl st in the ch 1, turn. ([N-1]/2 + number of ch)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join, turn.

Repeat Round 2 until you reach the desired length. Make enough Rounds to reach the ankles to make pants.

Fasten off.

Second leg:

Now you want to make the Second leg. Join with a sl st where the chain meets the back, ch 1, repeat Round 1 of the First leg, but you want to dec at the corner sc's by working an sc in the st where the chain meets the front and back as well as the free sc next to it.

Repeat Round 2 of the First leg until you reach the length from the First leg.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
