Learn to Sew Free of Charge

Nowadays it is very easy to learn about any subject or activity. With the internet, almost any kind of information is available at your fingertips, including courses and tutorials. There are courses at very reasonable prices and even free of charge.

Sewing is one of these activities that can be easily learned through video tutorials.

I will share my experience as an apprentice in this article, as well as a review of the Brother LX3817 sewing machine. This is an economical machine that is ideal for learning and making simple projects.

My Experience Learning to Sew

At home, we always had an old-fashioned sewing machine, a Singer straight, and a zig-zag sewing machine. My mother used it for simple projects, such as curtains, cushions, or simple alterations of some garments.

It had never caught my attention until it was put away for a while because it needed to be serviced. That's when I asked my dad to take a look at it and help me do the maintenance so I could learn how to use it.

My First Steps With a Sewing Machine

Once the machine was ready, the first thing I did was to search on YouTube for the model of my machine and how to thread it correctly. This is the first thing you must learn to do to avoid problems such as thread breakage, thread jamming, needle breakage due to too much tension in the thread, or sewing seams that do not come out correctly.

Afterward, I practiced sewing seams on a piece of fabric to adapt my foot to the speed of the machine. With a bit of practice, I began to make small projects such as cosmetic holders, cushions, yoga mat bags, adjustments to my clothing, etc.

After a while, a friend of my mom's told me that at the dry cleaners where she worked customers were asking for alterations or adjustments of clothes. So I took advantage of the opportunity and dedicated myself to that for a long time. With practice, I learned to change zippers, adjust shirts, and make other alterations. I learned all this through YouTube videos.

This allowed me to improve my technique and earn extra money.

After some time, I decided to come to live in Ecuador with my husband and this is where I currently reside.

Before long, I wanted an inexpensive sewing machine, but with more functions than the machine I had before.

Purchasing the Brother LX3817 Machine

After searching the internet, I found a local store where they had the Brother LX3817 machine. This caught my attention because of the price and the number of stitches and functions it had.

I searched on Amazon and liked the descriptions of what I could do with it. I liked the fact that the bobbin was in a horizontal position and the ease of threading the thread.

I saw some negative reviews about the product, but I didn't pay attention and proceeded with the positive reviews.

I didn't think twice and decided to buy my machine. It was the last one left and at a super low price. The salesman taught me in a few minutes how to set the thread and fill the bobbin. It was so easy that I immediately wanted to get home and start sewing.

I made the purchase in August 2019 and to date, I can honestly say that this has been a wise investment. I have completed several sewing projects and have not had any problems with my sewing machine.

Conclusion and Recommendations

If you are a beginner at sewing, I recommend this sewing machine. It is very easy to use and you will be able to make many projects thanks to the functions it brings and its 17 types of stitches.

Its price is very affordable and can be a suitable gift for those who want to start sewing.

I do have some recommendations:

  • Before using it, read the manual or use the included CD to learn step-by-step how to operate it. I tell you this because placing the thread incorrectly will bring you problems and the machine may jam. It is imperative to read the instructions to have a successful experience. In my opinion, the people who have complained about this machine have not followed the instructions from the beginning.
  • Keep it in a place where it does not receive direct sunlight.
  • Clean with a dry cloth, preferably microfiber. Do not use products such as alcohol to clean it because you can damage the plastic. Preferably use a damp cloth and a bit of neutral soap if it has a stain.
  • Check that the needle is correctly positioned and change it after a long time of use so that you do not damage the fabric or break it.

There are different types of needles depending on the thickness or material of the fabric. Make sure you use the right one so you don't damage the machine or the fabric you are working with.

Needle Guide

The thicker the fabric, the larger the needle will be.

  • 60 (EU)/ 8 (USA): this is the thinnest needle you will find on the market. It is suitable for very fine or delicate materials such as silk.
  • 65/9 to 70/10: for fine fabrics such as cotton.
  • 75/11 to 90/14: for all types of fabrics with a medium thickness.
  • 100/16: thick fabrics.
  • 110/18: Suitable for denim (you can also find special needles for this task) or upholstery.
  • 120/20: for thicker fabrics.

Finally, I recommend you practice and support yourself with video tutorials. If it is within your reach, it is a smart idea to enroll in a sewing course.

I hope this review has been helpful and that from now on you are encouraged to learn this wonderful art of sewing.
