Barbie Off-Shoulder Mermaid Gown (Free Crochet Pattern)

Author:

My favorite hobby is crocheting doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.

Crochet an Off-the-Shoulder Mermaid-Tail Gown for Barbie

Due to the rising popularity of mermaid-tail blankets, I finally gave in and designed this off-shoulder mermaid gown for Barbie. Since I refuse to make the life-sized mermaid-tail blankets (due to the heat in the Philippines), I thought I would just make something for Barbie that incorporates the mermaid design instead. In honor of all the people I know who just got married or are getting married soon, I thought that designing an evening gown for Barbie was appropriate.

This is a free crochet pattern for a mermaid-style doll gown. I used a Barbie Model Muse body to fit this design. Please visit my article called Crochet Clothes for Your Barbie Doll to find out more about the different body types of Barbie.

Mermaid Gown Pattern

I used the base pattern from my Barbie Asymmetrical Off-Shoulder Dress to make this gown. There seemed to be an issue with my previous pattern (from my transcribing it from my handwritten notes to the computer), so I wanted to remake it and fix the problems I could find.

To start, follow Rows/Rounds 1–24 of the asymmetrical dress pattern. Do not fasten off. From there, do the following:

  • Round 25: Ch 1, (sc, dc) around, join, turn. (38)
  • Rounds 26–30: Repeat Round 25. (38)
  • Round 31: Ch 1, (sc, dc) 4 times, dec, (sc, dc) 6 times, dec, (sc, dc) 5 times, join, turn. (34)
  • Round 32: Repeat Round 25. (34)
  • Round 33: Ch 1, (sc, dc) 3 times, dec, (sc, dc) 4 times, dec, (sc, dc) 6 times, join, turn. (30)
  • Round 34: Repeat Round 25. (30)
  • Round 35: Ch 1, (sc, dc) 4 times, dec, (sc, dc) 3 times, dec, (sc, dc) 4 times, join, turn. (26)
  • Round 36: Repeat Round 25. (26)
  • Round 37: Ch 1, (sc, dc) 3 times, dec, (sc, dc) 2 times, dec, (sc, dc) 4 times, join, turn. (22)
  • Round 38: Repeat Round 25. (22)

Note: You can choose to end it here for a knee length dress. The mermaid tail uses a lot of thread, so make sure you have enough before continuing to avoid wasting your time and effort.

Hi, Ivonne. You need to go visit the link provided in the pattern for Rows 1-24. I just used one of my old patterns to start with this design, so you should be able to find it there.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but in order for me to publish the pattern on this site, I need to be wary of having duplicate content (even between my own patterns), so I try to make sure I don't have any repeated lines.

Hi, How do you start the dress ? You don't have Row or round one you have 1-24 but I don't know how many chains I need to start the dress. I would appreciate it if you can help me. Thanks!

Hi, Sarah. Using thicker yarn will change the way the dress drapes on the doll and you won't be able to get the same level of detail you can get from thread.
