My favorite hobby is crocheting doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.

Crochet Some Short Shorts or Hot Pants for Barbie

As I was crocheting Barbie some new clothes from a book, I was struck by the lack of a crochet bottom for the outfit. I came up with these short shorts to complete the look.

This pattern was inspired by my design for snapless Barbie panties. This pattern also requires no snaps and is suitable for any beginner crocheter. You can also make the legs longer to create a pair of basic leggings.

As usual, this pattern is for the Barbie Basics Doll (or Model Muse). For more information on the different body types of Barbie, please visit my article, "Crochet Clothes for Your Barbie Doll."

What Are Short Shorts?

Short shorts are shorts that are cut very high and cover only the necessary parts. Perfect for summertime or confident ladies willing to show off their long legs, these shorts are considered to be inspired by the mini skirt. However, they offer more coverage, making it possible to achieve a much shorter look.

You can style these shorts with long tops or midriff-baring tops.

Materials Needed

  • Size No. 1 Steel Crochet Hook
  • Size No. 10 Crochet Cotton Thread
  • Tapestry Needle

10 sc, 12 sc rows = 1

Abbreviations Used in American Terms

  • Ch: chain
  • Sc: single crochet
  • St(s): stitch(es)
  • Sl st: slip stitch
  • RS: right side
  • WS: wrong side

Shorts Pattern

Round 1 (RS): Ch 33, sl st in first ch, ch 1, sc in each chain around, join with sl st in the first sc, turn. (33)

Round 2–3: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join, turn. (33)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in the first 10 sc, work 2 sc in the next sc, sc in the next 11 sc, work 2 sc in the next sc, sc in the next 10 sc, join, turn. (35)

Rounds 5–11: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn. (35)

Division for Legs

Round 12 (WS): Ch 6, sk the next 17 sts, sc in the next st, ch 1, sc in each st around the leg opening including the ch 6 in the middle, join with sl st to first sc, turn. (23)

Rounds 13–14: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn. (23)

Fasten off.

This is what it should look like after round 14:

The first leg done

Beginning in WS for the Other Leg

Round 12 (WS): Join thread with sc at the back of the shorts, right where the first free sc is located, sc in the next 16 sc, sc2tog the stitch between the previous st and the first ch with the first ch, sc in the next 4 ch, sc2tog in the same stitches as before, join with sl st in the first sc, turn. (23)

Note: I made a little change in round 12 to eliminate the holes it forms when you just do a round of sc for this leg. The 2 sc2tog's will do that and maintain the same number of stitches as the other side.

Rounds 13–14: same as rounds 13–14 of previous leg

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

How to Style Hot Pants

These shorts are very versatile and can be worn with almost anything in your Barbie's wardrobe.

For the picture below, I used the pattern Bahama from Nicky Epstein's book, Crochet for Barbie. The shorts are perfect to wear for a beach outing or just a fun day at the pool.

If you are looking for a quick no-snap top to pair with it, you can also go for a cropped top. It will surely make your Barbie doll ready for a quick workout at the gym or yoga class.

You can opt to make the legs longer and make Barbie basic leggings for more coverage.

Have fun and experiment with pairing these shorts with other things in Barbie's closet.

For my Barbie, I paired it with this backless piece along with a bag and hat for the beach.

Hi, Ann.

If the fit is loose, you can still adjust the size of the shorts by reducing the initial chains you make at the beginning of the pattern. I made this pattern to have a pair of shorts with no snap, but the elastic idea is good, too.

I used a 2.55 steel hook & added 4 rows instead of 2 to bottom of legs. If ever waist seems too big i used the thin sewing elastic, doubled, threaded it thru waist, tied a surgeons knot & fit was better.
