My favorite hobby is crocheting doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.
Crochet a Bodysuit (or Swimsuit) for a Barbie Doll
I always prefer making skirts for Barbie rather than tops. When I first started making Barbie clothes, I had to learn from reading patterns that were made for older Barbie body types. Since there were too many changes to the torso compared to the bottom half of the doll, it was much easier to adapt the skirt than the top.
In order to change it up, I thought I would make a bodysuit pattern which can be used as the base for any skirts I might design in the future. However, I found that since I only own crocheted outfits for my Barbie doll, I did not like the way it looked when you add a skirt on top of the bodysuit, so it ended up just being a swimsuit.
How the Suit Closes
The pattern starts with Barbie Panties and extends the waist part to form a corset top. So in order to put the bodysuit on Barbie, you need to slip on the panties first, and then close the back of the corset part by using snaps or thin velcro.
This is a free crochet pattern for a strapless bodysuit for Barbie. It was designed to fit Barbie Model Muse body types. For more information on the different body types of Barbie, please visit Crochet Clothes for Your Barbie Doll.
What Is a Bodysuit?
A bodysuit is a one-piece form-fitting garment that covers the torso and the crotch. While it usually has snaps at the crotch, since this was for Barbie, I thought that it would be more convenient for her panties to be slip-on and have the snaps at the back of the corset top instead. I personally find this look to be very versatile for Barbie as she can use it as a top, a swimsuit, or underwear.
Anything Layered Over This Suit Needs to Be a Bit Bigger
Just note that if you do decide to try out this design for Barbie, anything you want to put over it must be made just a bit larger so it will still close at the back. Unlike the skin-hugging bodysuit for people, this bodysuit is as thick as any regular crochet garment for Barbie.
This pattern uses the same materials and gauge as the Barbie Panties pattern, plus the fasteners.
- Size 10 crochet cotton thread
- No. 6 steel hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Wow this Barbie Doll swim suit looks fantastic. I myself do not knit but my sister knits and crochets all sorts of Barbie Doll clothes too. I will be passing on this article to her. She will be delighted to get a new pattern.
She sells them at crafts fairs and the dolls are very popular. I will be writing a hub on her designs soon too.
