My favorite hobby is to crochet doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.

Bodycon (or "body conscious") has been a huge trend for the past few seasons. Wearing bodycon outfits entails showing off the shape of your body. I was inspired by this trend to make a simple dress for Barbie.

This dress is specifically made for Barbie Basics (or Model Muse). For more information on the different body types that Barbie has over the years, check out my hub: Crocheting for Barbie Dolls.

As you might have noticed in my pattern, I put notes as to when you should fit the dress to the doll. This is to ensure that the dress will fit right and you will not need to frog the whole thing and start over.

Materials

  • Size 10 crochet cotton thread
  • No. 1 steel hook or size needed to obtain gauge (or fit your doll)
  • 3 small snaps or velcro

Gauge

10 sc = 1", 11 sc rows = 1"

Pattern

Note 1: Sc2tog = sc next 2 sts together

Starting from the bottom:

Rnd 1: Ch 40, sl st in the first ch to form ring, ch 1, sc in first ch, dc in next ch, (sc in next ch, dc in next ch) across, join with sl st in first sc, turn. (40 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, dc in next st, (sc in next st, dc in next st) across, join with sl st in first sc, turn. (40 sts)

Rnd 3-10: Repeat Rnd 2.

Note 2: If you want to increase the length of the dress, feel free to add an even number of Rnd 2's before continuing the next Rnd.

Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn. (40 sc)

Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in first 10 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 16 sts, sc2tog, sc in last 10 sts, join, turn. (38 sc)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in first 10 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 14 sts, sc2tog, sc in last 10 sts, join, turn. (36 sc)

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in first 10 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 12 sts, sc2tog, sc in last 10 sts, join, turn. (34 sc)

Note 3: This is when you can fit the tube on the doll to make sure it fits. It should fit properly, not too tight or you will have a hard time making the top part fit later, and not too loose or it will not be a bodycon anymore. If it is a little loose, you can adjust the fit at the end when you sew on the snaps.

Row 15: Working in rows, ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 10 sts, sc2tog, sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in last st, do not join, turn. (34 sc)

Row 16: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (34 sc)

Row 17: Ch 1, sc in first st, dc in next st, (sc in next st, dc in next st) across, turn. (34 sc)

Row 18-22: Repeat Row 17. (34 sc)

Row 23: Repeat Row 16. (34 sc)

Row 24: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog, turn. (34 sc)

Row 25: Repeat Row 16. (34 sc)

Row 26: Ch 1, sc in first 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last 9 sts, turn. (40 sc)

Row 27-28: Repeat Row 17. (40 sts)

Row 29: Ch 1, sc in first st, dc in next st, (sc in next st, dc in next st) 6 times, sk next st, 3 dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, 3 dc in next st, sk next st, sc2tog, sk next st, 3 dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, 3 dc in next st, sk next st, (sc in next st, dc in next st) across, turn.

Row 30: Ch 1, sc in first st, (dc in next st, sc in next st) 6 times, sk next st, dc in next 8 sts, sk next st, sc in next st, sk next st, dc in next 8 sts, sk next st, dc in next st, (sc in next st, dc in next st) 6 times, turn.

Row 31: Repeat Row 16. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends. Sew 3 small snaps evenly spaced (or long strip of velcro) down back opening of the dress.

Variations

This pattern can be used to make several different outfits just by simply changing the stitch design. One such change I made can be found in my blog: Barbie Doll Crochet Clothes.

Another way to change the look is to add ruffles. I made a peplum dress simply by adding ruffles at the waist of this dress. Instructions for this can be found in a separate hub: Sprucing Up Your Crochet Designs by Adding Ruffles.

One trend that you can also apply to this design is color blocking. You can change colors when you reach the waist (or whenever you want) and create a whole new look. You can look at my hub: Colorblocking Clothes in Crochet for more details on how to achieve a color block look. For an example of a colorblocked dress pattern, please visit Colorblocked Panel Sheath Dress.
