Witchy, a Funny Halloween Witch

Witchy, a funny Halloween witch with twisted legs, came in for a crash landing. Thanks to her long arms and legs, she managed to snag the nearest chair.

The kids will love Witchy and wonder how she can hold on by herself. This is a simple Halloween craft that takes very little time to make. Waiting for the paint to dry can take a while but you can hurry it up a bit by using a hair dryer.

You could also use a different lightweight box instead of the playing card box. Just remember to adjust the size of the felt cover for it.

Supplies List

  • Eight black chenille strips
  • Playing card box
  • Paper punch
  • Hot glue
  • Styrofoam egg
  • Craft paint: black, flesh
  • Yarn, about four yards, any color
  • Felt: Black, orange
  • Hat brim and crown (Pattern)
  • Box cover, shoe and mitten (Pattern)
  • 9" x 10" piece of black fabric
  • 10" piece of narrow black ribbon
  • Three colored buttons
  • Craft broom
  • Four 12" pieces of wire, optional

Paint the Styrofoam egg with flesh (or whatever color you choose) paint and let it dry.

From the black felt, cut four witch’s shoe shapes, the box cover shape, and the hat brim and crown pieces.

From orange (or whatever color you choose) felt, cut four mitten shapes.

Twist two black chenille stems together to make each leg and each arm. Twist one end of the arm stems together to form one long strip.

Lay the strip across the opened flaps on the bottom of the playing card box and glue the arms inside the box flaps.

Punch two holes in the top flap of the playing card box, thread each leg through a hole, twist the leg ends together, and glue the flap closed.

Fold the yarn together until the hank is about 12” long and cut the folded ends. Tape one end of the hank to make it easier to glue it to the Styrofoam egg head.

Glue the painted Styrofoam head to the center of the card box lid—between the two arms end. Glue two felt shoe shapes together at the foot area. Sandwich the end of a leg between the shoe tops and glue in place. Repeat with the other two shoe shapes. Glue two mitten shapes together in the hand area. Sandwich the end of the arm between the wrist area and glue. Repeat with the other mitten shape. Glue the yarn hank to the witch's head.

Witch's Hat

Make a witch hat by gluing the crown sides together and then cutting small slits up from the bottom of the cone made. Then cut a hole in the center of the black felt circle brim, tuck the cone shape inside, and glue the cut tabs to the brim. Place and glue the hat over the yarn hair.

Glue the buttons to the front of the witch’s body. Gather together the top of the 9” x 10” black fabric and glue the gathered end to the center of the black ribbon. Tie the cape on the witch. Glue the handle of the broom to the witch.

Witchy Has Landed

With black paint, paint a witchy face. Witchy has landed!

Note: To give the arms and legs more twist, add a piece of wire when twisting the chenille strips together.
