Why Make Homemade Mother’s Day Crafts?

There are many benefits in making your own holiday gifts. Here are just a few of the reasons as to why a homemade gift is so great:

  • You save money by making the gift yourself (or by allowing your children to make it themselves).
  • A homemade gift is often more special than a store bought one.
  • Creating something from scratch takes time, and your special someone will know that you put a lot of thought into it. Homemade gifts are appreciated if only for the reason of “it’s the thought that counts!”
  • It’s simple. You don’t have to get an artist to create these crafts. A child could do it easily, so you are able to make these items.
  • It's a good lesson for kids who are getting caught up in material things. They will have fun making these gifts and will get a glimpse of what the world used to be like without what it has today. In other words, the child’s mom will appreciate the fact that her kid took the time to make something out of simple materials all by his or herself.

  • Crayons and Markers (Any art supply can be used.)

How to Make a Construction Paper Card

  1. Using a wavy pattern or crimping scissors, cut a different colored piece of construction paper about an inch smaller on all sides (see the picture for clarification).
  2. Glue the crimped piece of construction paper to the background.
  3. On the new piece of paper, draw the letters for the holiday using colored markers.
  4. Color the inside of the bubble letters with crayons.
  5. Cut out the shapes using different colored pieces of paper. Glue them together to the art page.
  6. Let your children sign the back of their art and add the year.
  7. Give it to mom or grandmother and watch them enjoy it!

An Alternative Paper Kids Craft Idea

  • Feel free to spell out whatever message you wish to send to your loved one this holiday; perhaps include their name or even just spell out the entire phrase of “Happy Mother’s Day!” You will need to create smaller words than how I drew it in the picture.
  • Use different colors and perhaps include a drawing.
  • Include a personalized message.
  • Create your own cutout shapes or use different stencils.

This fun card is best made with creativity. It’s enjoyable to create, as you get to decorate it with washi tape and stickers. Have a blast creating this Mother’s Day card, and make it your own!

Use similar washi tape to get the look of the card I made or as a cheaper alternative, try stickers!

What You'll Need

  • Elmer’s Glue/glue stick/tape
  • Different washi tapes
  • Crimping scissors
  • Stencils
  • Scissors
  • Sharpie Marker
  • Colored Construction Paper

How to Make a Washi Tape Card

  1. Fold your piece of construction paper in half.
  2. Cut the borders of the card using crimping scissors.
  3. Tape or glue on to the cover and the two pages of the inside of the card different colors of pieces of construction paper (I did this with green paper).
  4. Using a sharpie, write messages on those little pieces of paper that you just added in the previous step.
  5. Decorate the card with washi tape or try stickers if you don’t have washi tape. This is the fun step, so go wild with it!
  6. Using a stencil (or just cut the shape you want), create the shape you wish to include in your card (I made a flower). Glue the shape to the card.
  7. Let your children sign the back of their art and add the year.
  8. Give it to mom or grandmother and watch them enjoy it!

An Alternative Washi Tape Card Idea

  • Cut out a different shape.
  • Draw and color in the areas that I used washi tape.
  • Create your own personalized message for the inside of the card.
  • Go wild with where and how you add the washi tape.
  • Use whatever color scheme you wish. Be creative!

This homemade flower is sure to win the heart of grandma or mom this Mother’s Day. It’s the perfect craft for multiple children; each child can trace their hand in their choice of colored construction paper, and the colored hands can be joined to form the flower. How pretty!

It’s a simple craft and doesn’t take up a lot of expensive supplies. You can create it with normal office or craft supplies. There's no need for you or the children to be artists; it’s ideal for any age! Even an only child can make it—just create a variety of flower leaves with the different colors but of the same hand!

What You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Sharpie Marker
  • Elmer’s Glue/glue stick/tape
  • Colored construction paper

How to Make Hand Flower Art

  1. Gather your materials.
  2. Cut out the hands, the stem of the flower, and the leaves. For the hands, trace the children’s hands.
  3. Glue or tape all cut-outs to the blank construction paper.
  4. Accent the leaves and stem with marks from a black marker.
  5. With the same black marker, write “Happy Mother’s Day!” in an arc above the flower.
  6. Let your children sign the back of their art and add the year.
  7. Give it to mom or grandmother and watch them enjoy it!

An Alternative Flower Art Idea

  • As you can see in the picture of this project, the first “flower” is made up of my hand. If you are helping your children make this craft for their grandmother, you may wish to include your hand as I did.
  • Be adventurous and as grass or the sky with green and blue markers, crayons, and/or colored pencils.
  • Include stickers; add more details to the flowers; include more leaves; create more than one flower; include mom’s or grandma’s name – “Happy Mother’s Day Nancy!” Include a personalized message or poem on the back and most importantly, have fun!

How to Make a Coloring Book Craft

  1. Gather your materials.
  2. Cut out the art page out of the construction paper to the size and shape you wish it to be.
  3. In a coloring book for adults (that’s what I used), use the markers or gel pens (or any craft material) to color a small picture using a variety of colors!
  4. Glue or tape the picture to the blank construction paper (the background – see pic).
  5. With the same black marker or colored marker, write “Happy Mother’s Day!” and/or draw a picture or include a personalized message!
  6. Use a heart hole punch around the border or add a piece of art if you'd like.
  7. Let your children sign the back of their art and add the year.
  8. Give it to mom or grandmother and watch them enjoy it!

Design the inside of the card in whatever manner you wish. Just have fun and unleash your creative nature! Make it sweet for Mother's Day!

An Alternative Coloring Book Craft Idea

  • Find or draw whatever image you wish for the art page. Go wild with coloring!
  • For the “Happy Mother’s Day!” message, use glitter or shimmering markers.
  • Include stickers or washi tape.
  • Instead of the heart hole punches along the border of the art, draw and color your own art. If you want to keep it simple, just draw tiny hearts and color them red or pink.

Include a Poem in the Card!

Want to include a poem inside the card? Try something simple that rhymes, like this:

“Mom – You are so sweet (add a picture of candy)

And you never miss a beat (include a drawing of music notes)

I love you so very much (you can add a heart where the word LOVE is)

And I’m glad you don’t need a crutch! (include a drawing of a crutch)

There is so much more I could say (add a picture of lips)

But most of all, have a happy Mother’s Day!” (draw a flower or a simple butterfly)

This is extremely cheesy, but you get the idea! Be creative and just let the child make it his or her own. Help them to come up with the best words to use; I’m sure you could come up with something that isn’t so goofy! :)
