All About Glacier Paste

Glacier paste, one of the newest products from Tonic Studio, is a formulation of tiny mica flakes suspended in a colored suspension. It tends to be somewhat flatter than other embossing pastes. There are currently 12 colors.

Each jar contains 50ml/1. 7fl.oz of product, so it will last you a long time.

  • Paste packed full of reflective mica flakes
  • Can be used on a wide variety of materials
  • Can be used on light or dark surfaces
  • Can be mixed with water
  • Can be applied using different tools

When you use the paste, it spreads very easily, like soft butter. It is smoother and thinner than other embossing products. But it is perfect for glitzing up a piece of card or patterned paper, or to accent colored images and to add subtle background patterns through stencils too.

You can use them with a palette knife, a paintbrush, or a silicone spatula. You can build them up to add texture to any project you are working with.

They especially shine well on black or another dark cardstock.

What Can You Do With Glacier Paste?

  • Use a using a paintbrush to apply the paste to a colored image, or even just splatter in the background too
  • Use some foam to add a touch of the product to a small square of foam and simply drag it over an embossed piece of card
  • Spread some glacier paste on a dry piece of cardstock and then die cut it
  • Use the glacier paste on stencils. Use foam if you want a thicker effect. Otherwise, use a palette knife

Make Color Swatches

It is recommend that you create color swatches or color charts for your Nuvo Glacier Pastes. This is very helpful when choosing colors. Create your swatches using tags so that may have a large area of color to see. Create the tag using white cardstock, but you can also swatch the Nuvo Glacier Pastes on to black cardstock to see what they look like on dark surfaces (this is the circle of cardstock that you can see in the bottom right of the tag). This will help you when you are creating, as you can select the color that you want to use and the surface as well.

The current colors include:

  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Golden Era
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Haute Red
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Green Envy
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Quicksilver
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Sea Sprite
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Frostbite
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Mambo Melon
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Pineapple Delight
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Winter White
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Iron Fist
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Frosted Petal
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Pink Icing
  • Nuvo Glacier Paste Crushed Cranberry

Glacier Paste Tips

  • Keep the foam insert in the jar and pop it in the lid. This helps to control moisture in the jar.
  • Make sure your card is completely dry before die-cutting; otherwise the card could get stuck in the die or tear as you’re removing it from the die.

Using Glacier Paste

Glacier paste is another way to add a foiling effect to cardstock. Although you most often would think of applying it to paper, it has other uses too. It can be used to add shimmer to a variety of materials such as fabric, acetate, glass, and wood.

Uses and Techniques for Glacier Paste

  1. Add a tiny bit of water to the product and then apply it to any colored image with a paintbrush.
  2. Splatter it in a background of an art journal or junk journal.
  3. Use it over an embossed cardstock as a single or multiple color application.
  4. Apply it to a clean piece of cardstock. Once dry, stamp or die cut the piece.
  5. Apply it on top of a stencil. You will want to add more than one application to get a good, stenciled image.
  6. Add it over an inked background that is dry.

Using It on Stencils

Glacier paste is perfect for use on stencils. It has a slightly gritty feel but goes on smooth and easy. Using a silicone spatula means that you can spread it easily and remove any excess, so that you do not waste any product. You can create tags, backgrounds, journal pages and greeting cards.

Glacier Paste Basic Stencil Tips

  • Tape down a stencil on to a surface using low tack tape.
  • Apply Nuvo Glacier Paste over stencil.
  • Apply a thick or thin layer depending on preference.
  • Move the spatula in different directions to get an even coating.
  • Allow the project to dry for 24 hours.

Ink Blending Technique

  • Tape stencil on to surface with low tack tape.
  • Ink blend through the stencil using a Nuvo Blending Dauber.
  • Using same dauber, apply Nuvo Glacier Paste over the ink blend.
  • Use sweeping motions or dabbing, depending on the look you want.

Making a Fade Stencil Sheet

This works best on darker cardstock. If you really want a fantastic standout technique, use shiny cardstock.

Supplies

  • Shinny cardstock
  • Glacier Paste -2 colors
  • silicone spatula or palette knife
  • Stencil
  1. Spread your first color of glacier paste along the top of your stencil
  2. Make sure that it is spread evenly before going to the next color. Move the spatula in different directions to get an even coat
  3. Go to the bottom of the cardstock and start spreading the second color.
  4. You want to start thicker from the bottom and work thinner as you go up to the other color.
  5. When you get close to the other color just dab the colors together to get a good mix
  6. Pull up the stencil and allow the paste to dry

More Stencil Ideas

  • Once you add the paste, start wiping it with a baby wipe to get a ghost image.
  • Use a sponge to add the glacier paste, then wipe it down a little to get a better effect.
  • Use more than one color for a blended technique.
  • Use a nylon brush to apply the paste to get an even technique.
