The Mona Lisa

Art has been an integral part of human life since time immemorial. Ancient people used to etch drawings on caves. They communicated through these drawings and preserved their culture for posterity.

In this article, I will address the following questions:

  1. What is art?
  2. What is the purpose of art in our lives?
  3. Why has art survived for long?

What Is Art?

What is art? People have been contemplating this question for centuries. How can we distinguish between fine art and a beautiful poster? How can we call both Malevich's Black Square and Da Vinci's La Joconde (Mona Lisa) art, yet not include some people's paintings and drawings into this category?

Malevich's Black Square

The most striking aspect of Malevich's Black Square, painted in 1915, is the fact that almost all of the standard techniques of traditional painting are excluded. There is no perspective, no tonal shading and even the description of three-dimensional space is missing. Except for the square itself, there is no recognizable form. Color has been rendered in its binary form: a roughly painted black square on a white linen canvas, which measures under one meter in each axis.

The astounding result of the painting is a picture that deliberately represents nothing. It is strikingly similar to the silhouette left behind when a picture is removed from a wall, where the surrounding space has been bleached by sunlight and a lingering shadow is left in its wake.

Black Square espouses a void, a removal of the artistic method, an artistic tabula rasa. And that is precisely its point.

My Definition of Art

I believe that the only thing that distinguishes between these works are the artist and the artist's objective. The connection between what artists intends to achieve and what they actually achieve through the medium is what I believe defines art. If what the artist meant to express is comprehended by at least on person in the world, then we can call that work a work of art.

A work of art, on the other hand, is defined as a masterpiece when not only an individual understands it but when many people do.

There is a common misconception that the fine arts are elitist. While there may be an iota of truth behind this misconception judging by the prices artworks of the old masters fetch at auctions, art is not something you have to study to understand and enjoy.

What Is the Purpose of Art?

In conclusion, art can be defined as something that inspires people, transports them to alternate realities and moves them into the subconscious realms that remain unknown.

Art enchants, enthralls and bewilders depending on whether the artist is trying to communicate an emotion, an idea or something else. The most important thing is how well the audience receives it.

If a work of art can spark a debate on whether it is art or not, then it is art.
